SMS On Target To Beat £5m Turnover

SMS, the Aberdeen-based sand management specialist, is planning for extensive growth in both North Sea and international markets. Over the next three years the organisation is expecting to reach £5,000,000 in annual turnoverwhich it says is easily achievable with growth rates of 15-20% per annum.

SMS has a portfolio of products which are split into Services, Management and Systems providing work for well testing companies, operators and engineering companies.

In 2012, SMS expects to be providing services in at least 12 different countries, most of which will be supported by the headquarters office in Aberdeen with the potential to open additional international satellite offices. The company reveals it could be required to reach a headcount of nearly 50 people soon and plans to recruit a minimum of six new employees each year over the next three years. The recruitment plan involves taking on a mix of graduate engineers and geoscientists as well as experienced mid-career professionals.

Frazer Barclay, Business Development Manager, says, “Having revenue coming from three different inter-related business streams, which are balanced with long and short term projects, has provided stable growth for the company. Through strong management and a commitment to quality these growth rates are conservative compared to rates of 30% seen in recent years. SMS believes it is possible to reach a turnover of nearly £7,000,000 if the market remains as active as it is now.”

Frazer continues, “Despite the financial crisis and volatility in oil prices, SMS has grown steadily since 2004. The main reason for this is the oil and gas industries increased awareness of integrity risks combined with pressure to increase production.”

“Understanding sand production and how to manage it can lead to reducing the chances of hydrocarbon leaks as well as optimising production. SMS helps the major service companies and operators with sand monitoring and sand management from initial production tests through to brown field redevelopment where the onset of sand production is later in the field life.”

Frazer concludes, “Going forward, international markets will be a key source of future growth. SMS, with assistance from the Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International, has recently broken into new markets in Africa and Asia.”
